NEWHALL:  Bessie M. Smith, 91, died Saturday,  February 14, 2009 at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab in Vinton following an extended illness.
     Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall with Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating.  Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery near Newhall.  Friends may call at the church from 9 AM, until service time on Wednesday.  Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
     Bessie was born April 14, 1917 at Des Moines to Frank and Minnie Mabel (Harvey) Brundage and graduated from Johnston High School in Johnston, Iowa.  On October 17, 1943 she was united in marriage to Richard C. Smith at Vinton.  The couple made their home in Newhall and after retirement they spent 13 years as volunteers at Pikes Peak State Park, maintaining the campgrounds.  Richard preceded Bessie in death on September 18, 2000.
      Bessie was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall where she enjoyed membership in the Leisure Club.  In her leisure she enjoyed crafts.
      She is survived by one niece and three nephews.
      In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harvey Brundage; and two sisters,  Ferne Bramhall and Elma Bishop.
       A Memorial Fund has been established.
