ATKINS: Clayton W. Cain, 83, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, December 15, 2008 at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Atkins with Pastor Mike Andrew officiating. Interment will be held at Raetz Cemetery near Atkins with Graveside Military Rites conducted by the A.H. Schueler American Legion Post #217 of Atkins. Visitation will also be held at the church in Atkins from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday. A Memorial Fund has been established. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
Clayton was born on December 1, 1925 at Cainsville, MO to Claude and Bernice (Hart) Cain and graduated from the Cainsville High School. He served his nation in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a Quarter Master 2nd Class and then from 1951 to 1953 he was an Airman 3rd Class with the US Air Force. He received several Awards and Medals during his military career.
He was a crew supervisor for E & F Construction Co. of Cedar Rapids. He was a member of A.H. Schueler American Legion Post #217 of Atkins, the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church. In his leisure he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and shooting pool. He also was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and collected baseball caps.
On July 5, 1968 he married Frances Schueler Burkart at Cainsville, MO. He is survived by his wife, Frances of Atkins; his children, Clinton (Mary) Cain of Eldorado Springs, MO, Lois McDaniel, Wendy (John) Hessenius, Carol (Thom) George, Marcy (Dave) Pennington, and Mark Cain, all of Cedar Rapids; his step-sons, Leonard (Connie) Burkart of Iowa City, Joe (Ann) Burkart of Crestview, FL, Richard (Sandy) Burkart of Swisher, and Michael (Regina) Burkart of Newhall; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers, Harvey Gene, Derrol, and Frank Cain; and his sisters, Mary and Shirley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Clayton "Skip" Cain, II; his step-son, Franklin "Junior" Burkart; his granddaughter, Meegan Burkart; and three brothers and two sisters.
