SHELLSBURG:   David Lee "Whoop" Young,  Sr., 68, died Thursday, October 29, 2009 at his residence, following an extended illness.

     Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM, Monday, November 2, 2009 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St., in Vinton with Rev. Barb Tieszen officiating.  Interment will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery near Covington with Graveside Military Rites conducted by the American Legion Post #166 of Shellsburg.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday.  A memorial fund has been established.

     David was born July 29, 1941 to Gaylord and Lillian (Waite) Young at Cedar Rapids.  During Viet-Nam he served his nation in the US Navy.  He was a member of the Shellsburg Legion.

     On July 23, 1965 he married Mary Gott at Walker. 

     Prior to his retirement David was employed as a machine mechanic.

     He is survived by his children, Jim (Sandra) Young, Center Point, David (Christine) Young, Jr., Shellsburg, Scott (Angela) Young, Center Point, and Tina Young, Center Point; seven grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two sisters; and his dog, Jiggs.

     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Angel Marie; two brothers; and three sisters.
