ATKINS-Douglas C. Gardemann, 74, died Friday, May 29, 2009 at Westridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids following a brief battle with cancer.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, June 1, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall with Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Committal Services will be held at 1:30 PM, Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. The Visitation will also be held at the church in Newhall from 3 to 6 PM on Sunday. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
Douglas was born June 17, 1934 on a farm near Newhall to Merle and Evelyn (Kunstorf) Gardemann. From 1956 to 1958 he served his nation in the US Army and was stationed in Germany.
On September 13, 1959 he was united in marriage to Lurline Braksiek at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Douglas farmed in the Newhall/Atkins area and retired in 1996. After his retirement he worked part-time for the Linn Co-Op. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall and his favorite hobby was fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Lurline of Atkins; his son, Michael (Angie) Gardemann of Newhall; his daughter, Kim (David) Stevenson of Kansas City, KS; his grandchildren, Ashley and Nathan Leidigh, Jeremy, and Brandon Gardemann , and McKenzi, Samuel and Noah Stevenson; and his sister, Jo (Buck) Pickerill of Amana.
His parents preceded him in death.
