CEDAR RAPIDS: Ethel B. Hadley, age 91, of the Meth-Wick Community, and formerly of Mt. Auburn, returned home to the Lord on Thursday, July 13, 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born April 24, 1915 in University Park, NE, the daughter of the Rev. Dorr D. and Grace Winborn Whitmore. She graduated from Garrison High School in 1932 and, foregoing an opportunity to attend Julliard, graduated with a degree in musical education from Cornell College in1936. While teaching school in New Providence, IA, she met and married Robert W. (Bob) Hadley on July 19, 1942 and traveled with him to Texas and Oklahoma during Bob's army service. In 1949 she and Bob moved to Mt. Auburn after purchasing the Mt. Auburn Savings Bank. Ethel worked alongside Bob in the bank until their retirement in 1987. In 1990, Ethel and Bob moved to the Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids, where Bob preceded her in death in November 2000.
Ethel was a member of the Mt. Auburn Methodist Church for forty years and was the church treasurer and organist and music director during most of that time. Her constant faith was a blessing to her family and her community. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Mt. Auburn. A lover of the arts, she was active in Meth-Wich's Write-and-Share and Chimes programs and a long-time supporter of The Old Creamery Theatre. Ethel loved reading, knitting, and was an accomplished seamstress.
She is survived by two sons and their families; Richard (Rick) and Betsy Hadley of Vinton, grandson Ross and Nori Hadley and great-grandsons Simon and Thomas of Decorah; Roger Hadley and his fiancée Vicki Galloway, daughter-in-law Linda Hadley, all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Kelly and Mike Bohning and great-grandsons Brandon and Benjamin of Olathe, KS; and Jason and Amy Hadley with great-grandchildren Dylan and Keegan of Scottsdale, AZ. Other surviving family includes close cousins and a niece and nephew. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Monday, July 17, 2006 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St., in Vinton with Rev. Jim Blair officiating. Private family interment will be held at the New Providence Cemetery in New Providence, IA.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 PM on Sunday.
A memorial fund has been established in lieu of flowers.
