VINTON:  George Gillis, age 62, died Tuesday, August 8, 2006, at his residence following an extended illness.
     Graveside Services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, August 12, 2006 at McBroom Cemetery near Shellsburg, with Graveside Military Rites conducted by AMVET Post 218 of Vinton. Phillips Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
     George was born September 29, 1943 at St. Louis, MO to Wes and Laura Gillis.  He attended Shellsburg Community School before joining the Military in 1959.  After an honorable discharge in 1962, he drove semi-trucks for various trucking companies until he purchased his own rig.  He was a member of AMVETS Post #218 in Vinton and an avid stock car racing fan. 
     He is survived by his sons, Joseph Chase, Sr. of NJ and Corey Croxell of Lawrence, KS, his daughters, Diane Jackson of PA, and Kim Hard of Center Point; his brother, Lou of Vinton; his sisters, Dorothy (Leonard) Armstrong of Atkins, Sherry (Frank) Ham of Eufaula, OK, and Arleen Garvin of Norwalk, VA; his girlfriend and caregiver, Jeannie Tarvin and several grandchildren.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James Gillis and his sister, Norma Gould.
     He will be missed by many.
     In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the American Cancer Society or AMVETS Post #218 of Vinton.
