GARRISON: Glen W. Hiemstra, age 58, died Friday, August 25, 2006 near Columbus, Ohio as a result of a traffic accident.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 31, 2006 at the Garrison United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Blair officiating. Interment will be held at the Garrison Cemetery with Graveside Military Rites conducted by George Hardinger American Legion Post #475 of Garrison. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St, in Vinton from 5 to 8 PM on Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established.
Glen was born March 3, 1948 at Oskaloosa to Leonard and Maurita (Scott) Hiemstra. He attended Pella High School and during the Viet Nam War he served his nation in the U.S. Navy.
On January 24, 1975 he married Karen Baughman at Knoxville. Glen was a farmer and also a truck driver for Miller Transportation. Prior to his truck-driving career, he was a member of the Garrison Lions Club and a former Farm Bureau Insurance Agent. In his leisure he enjoyed riding his snowmobile, carpentry, and deer hunting.. His greatest pleasure came from spending time with his family and friends. Glen attended Blessed Hope Church in Vinton and was a member of the Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, Karen of Garrison; his children, Eric (Tristan) Hiemstra of Baltimore, MD and their daughter, Gabriella, Howard (Jennifer) Hiemstra of Dodge City, KS and their son, Xavier, and Katie (Brian) Vanderbilt of Mundelein, IL; his brothers, Alvin (Lonnah) Hiemstra of Fairfield, WA, Marvin (Vivian) Hiemstra, and Stan (Dorothy) Hiemstra, all of Knoxville; his sister, Ruth (Wayne) Hugen of Des Moines; his in-law parents, Robert and Yvonne Baughman of Garrison and many nieces and nephews.
His parents and his brother, Harold Hiemstra preceded him in death.
Glen will be missed by his family and friends.
