VINTON: George E. Smith, formerly of Cedar Rapids, age 74, died Monday, June 12, 2006 at his residence following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at the First Christian Church in Vinton with Rev. David Gates officiating. Private Committal Services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call at the church from 9 AM until service time on Wednesday. A Memorial Fund has been established.
George was born March 11, 1932 at Macomb, IL to Willard and Gertrude (Nellist) Smith and graduated from the Urbana High School in 1950. On July 14, 1990 he married Mary Ellen Rosekrans at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
After 32 years of service as a Letter Carrier, George retired on April 1, 1987 from the U.S. Postal Service in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Vinton. In his leisure he enjoyed woodworking, fishing and farm animals.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Smith; his son, Kevin (Roxy) Smith of Cedar Rapids; his daughters, Bonnie (John) Peal of Marion, and Kris White of Corpus Christi, TX; his grandchildren, Christopher Peal, Jennifer Peal, Samantha and Rachel Smith, Crystal Alexander, Heather Fausnight, and Natalie White; his step-children, Rickie Rosekrans and Rodney (Gayle) Rosekrans all of Camdenton, MO; Carilyn (Tom) Engledow, and Rita (Ron) Lane all of Vinton; his step-grandchildren, Ashley and Brenden Lane, Alesia and Dan Engledow, Rishae Proffitt, William and Stanley Rosekrans and Darcie Loffler.
His parents; a grandson and two great-granddaughters preceded him in death.
