VINTON - Rev. Herbert Clyde Shaffer, age 93, died Sunday, September 16, 2007 at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, September 21, 2007 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St., in Vinton with Rev. Kären Larson officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday. A memorial fund has been established. Rev. Shaffer was born October 13, 1913 at Masontown, WV to Dorsey Allen and Minnie Mae (Knisell) Shaffer. Following graduation from West Virginia Wesleyan in Buchkannon, WV he attended West Minister Seminary in Maryland. He served congregations in New Hartford, and Parkersburg before becoming the Pastor of Stewart Memorial Methodist Church in Vinton and the Urbana United Methodist Church in Urbana. During the winter month while wintering in Texas, Rev. Shaffer provided pastoral care to the sick. On July 3, 1936 he was united in marriage to Helen L. Hawkins at Albright, WV. She preceded her husband in death on September 5, `988. He married Sarah Van Buren on November 18, 1989 at Vinton. Rev. Shaffer is survived by his wife, Sarah; his son, Herbert (Martha) Shaffer, Jr. of San Diego, CA; his daughters, Diora Hewer of Camanche, IA, Wailana (William) Barker of Rochester, MN, Erma Souhrada of Joshua, TX, Gwen (Vic) Szymcek of Harrin, IL, and Charlene (Bruce) Posekany of Cedar Falls; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to his parents and wife, Helen, he was preceded in deathy by three sons-in-law, three brothers, Roy, Walter and Earl ; and three sisters, Pearl, Ada, and Martha.
