VINTON: Harriett Margaret Beatty, 97, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at the Hiawatha Care Center following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St., in Vinton with Rev. Ronald Sumption officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 7 PM on Friday. A Memorial Fund has been established. Harriett was born January 10, 1912 in Cedar Rapids to Myron and Margaret (Hall) Lubbock. She graduated from Shellsburg High School and the University of Iowa with a degree in Home Economics. She married Harold Beatty on April 13, 1935 in Davenport. The couple farmed in the Vinton area for sixty years. Harold preceded her in death on April 24, 1995. Harriett was a member of the Vinton Women's Club, the Vinton Presbyterian Church Circle, Harrison School Club, Harmony Club and she was a Benton County 4-H Leader for ten years. She is survived by her children, Carole (Richard) Swanson, of Cedar Rapids, Garth (Pat) Beatty of Vinton, Janet (Jim) Thompson of Decorah; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Lewis, John, Robert, Russell, and Lawrence; and her three sisters, Katherine, Helen, and Margaret. Harriett was known as a person with boundless energy. She enjoyed making her old fashioned fudge, chocolate cream cheese filled cupcakes for the grandchildren, raising her roses, cross-stitching many projects and spending time with her family.
