MT AUBURN-Iola Patava Coleman, age 94, died Friday, July 21, 2006 at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following an extended illness.  Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M., Monday July 24, 2006 at the Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church with Rev. Julie McCullough officiating.  Interment will be held at the Mt Auburn Cemetery.  Friends may call from 1-3 P.M., Sunday at the Phillips Family Center (605 2nd Ave) Vinton.
Iola was born February 28, 1912 near Elberon, IA to Joseph and Marie (Novak) Patava.  She married William Cecil Coleman on November 11, 1934 at the Vinton Methodist Parsonage.  William preceded his wife in death in 1976.
Iola worked side-by-side farming with her husband in the Traer, LaPorte City and Mt Auburn areas.   After retiring from farming in 1963 the couple moved to Mt. Auburn and remained there until her death.  After moving off of the farm Iola worked as a clerk at Simon's Clothing in Vinton for more than 20 years.   She was a member of the Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church for over 50 years. As an active member of the church, she was 50-year pin holder of the U.M.W. and held several church offices.  Iola was a member of the Rebecka Lodge in Mt. Auburn.  She also served as a 4-H leader and was a Red Cross Volunteer.  Iola enjoyed her church work, her Red Cross work and shared many of her crocheted handiwork items with family and friends.  Many family and friends enjoyed her delicious baked goods.
She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Bernard of Midville, GA; three sisters-in-law, Sylvia Shockley of Greenwood, IN, Mildred Coleman of Brazil, IN, and Ethel Coleman of Rockville, IN; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Frank, and Donald Patava; and five sisters, Mary Chizek, Bessie Stepanek, Emily Petersen, Agnes Schmitt, and Rose Groves.
Memorials may be given to the Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church, the Mt. Auburn Fire Department or the Red Cross.
