NEWHALL: James Charles Rich, age 61, died Friday, August 8, 2008 of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident near Newhall.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Rev. David Gates officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 8 PM, Monday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
James was born January 24, 1947 in Detroit, MI to James Antonio and Helen (Bridges) Rich. In 1965 he graduated from Stanberry Missouri R-2.
Following graduation from high school he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served one tour in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged four years later at the rank of Staff Sergeant.
From 1969 to 2001 James served as a State Trooper with the Iowa State Patrol. Following his retirement he became a Benton County Reserve Deputy and currently served in that capacity. He truly loved his long career in law enforcement. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing and absolutely loved flying! He also enjoyed watching a good western and kicking back in his recliner with a good book. Two of his favorite genres included science fiction and action/adventure.
He is survived by his four children; Lisa A. (Christopher) Rich-McKelvey of Ames, John C. (Dee) Rich of Chandler, AZ, Keith A. (Heidi) Rich of Des Moines, and Barbara C. Rich of Des Moines, nine grandchildren; Forrest Rittel, Megan Rich, Nicolas Uhlenberg, Liv Uhlenberg, Maddalena Rich, Mason Rich, Miles Rich, Zoey Rich, and Owyn McKelvey, five sisters; Rose (Alan) Cunningham, Barbara Rich, Patricia Rich, Alice Brazzle, and Helen Beth (Jeff) Jech, and three brothers, John (Mary) Rich, Al (Barbara) Rich, and Joe (Linda) Rich.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, George Rich.
