NEWHALL:  James T. Gibney, 90, died Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a short illness.
      A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 4, 2009 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Newhall, with Father Jack McClure as Celebrant.  Interment will be held at St. Michael's Cemetery in Norway with military rites conducted by the Norway American Legion Post #234.  Friends may call at the church in Newhall from 4 until 7 P.M. on Friday, where a vigil service will be held at 7:00 P.M.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
        James was born July 24, 1918 near Watkins to James E. and Florence (Smith) Gibney and attended Norway High School.  James served his country honorably during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps.
       On November 18, 1947 he was united in marriage to Germaine Deeny at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma, Iowa.  The couple farmed near Newhall until their retirement.
James was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Watkins and St. Paul's Catholic Church in Newhall, the Catholic Order of the Foresters, the Norway American Legion Post #234, committee member of the Benton County ASCS and the Newhall First Stop Morning Coffee Club.
In his leisure James enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and driving his John Deere 3020 in the WMT Tractorcades.
       He is survived by his wife, Germaine his sons, Steve (Sandra) of Newhall, Wayne (Carmen) of Atkins; his grandchildren, Shane (Diane) Gibney, Julie (Aaron) Volesky, Kathleen (Dave) Parra, Ryan (Tammy) Gibney, and Jared and Tyler Gibney; his great grandchildren, Jacob and Cameron Gibney, Bodee Volesky and Carson Parra; his two brothers, Ambrose (Mary) Gibney of Norway and Robert (Sara) Gibney Stark of Cedar Rapids.            
       James was preceded in death by his parents James and Florence, his stepmother Marie Gibney and stepsister Edith Roslien.
       Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
