ATKINS:  Julia "Julie" Marie Spurgeon, 70, died Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha following  and extended illness.
     A Memorial Visitation will be held at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Atkins from 4 to 7 PM on Friday.  Private Committal Services will be held at Parker's Grove Cemetery near Shellsburg.
     "Julie" was born September 26, 1938 at Waterloo to Edward Daniel and Marie (Mahanke) Sims and graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1957 and from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon and where she was a member of Alpha Sigma Pi Sorority and earned her teaching degree.
      She was united in marriage to David Spurgeon and they celebrated 45 years of marriage prior to David's death on October 3, 2008.
      Julie taught at the Shellsburg High School in 1960 at Atkins from 1963 to 1968, at Franklin Jr. High in Cedar Rapids from 1968 to 1988, and at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids from 1988 to 1998.  Following her retirement, she was employed  at Sav-Half Card Shop in Cedar Rapids until 2008 and thoroughly enjoyed working there.  Julie was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Cedar Rapids.
     She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie (Tom) Busby of Arlington Heights, IL; her son, Stephan (Vicky) Spurgeon of Newhall; and her granddaughter, Allison Busby.
      In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, J. Richard and Michael Sims.
       The family wants to extend special thanks to Mercy Medical Center Dialysis Clinic and to the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for the excellent care she received.
