GARRISON:  Karl E. Barkdoll, 82, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Virginia Gay Hospital following an extended illness.

     Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St. in Vinton with Rev. Kären Larson officiating.  Interment will be held at the Garrison Cemetery with Graveside Military Rites conducted by the Geo. G. Hardinger American Legion Post #475 of Garrison.  Friends may register at the funeral home from 11 AM until service time on Saturday.  In lieu of flowers Karl would have appreciated donations in his name to the Garrison Fire Dept. .

     Karl was born August 2, 1927 at Garrison to Gerald C. and Isabella D. (Arthur Heubner) Barkdoll.

     Karl served in the United States Navy, was a truck driver between 1947-65, was a Teamster in Local 238 in Cedar Rapids and enjoyed racing, computers and cooking as his hobbies.  He loved his dogs and they were his loyal companions. 

     He is survived by his daughters, Tere Rae Stewart, Diana Lynn Barkdoll, and Mary Karlene Barkdoll; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; his sisters, Marilynn Buresh, and Leah Petersen; and his brothers, Gale, Don, Phillip, Allan and Gene Barkdoll.

     He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bobby Barkdoll, Art Huebner, Jerry Barkdoll, and Richard Barkdoll.

     The family extends special thanks to Dr. Mark Dearden and the staff at Virginia Gay Annex for the tender loving care they gave Karl the last six months of his life.
