NEWHALL:  Herbert R. and Beverly A. Kearns, both 66, died Monday, February 12, 2007 as a result of a traffic accident west of Cedar Rapids.
     A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, February 16, 2007 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Newhall with Father Ketih L. Birch as Celebrant.  Interment will be held at St. Patrick & St. Paul Cemetery near Watkins.  The visitation will also be held at the church from 4 to 8 PM on Thursday, where a Vigil Service will begin at 7 PM.  A Memorial Fund has been established.
     Beverly was born December 21, 1940 at Cedar Rapids to George and Bernice (Schmuecker) Becker.  She graduated from the Newhall High School in 1959 and then attended Mount Mercy College.
     Herbert was born December 12, 1940 at Cedar Rapids to Herbert and Carolyn (Moore) Kearns and graduated from Walford High School in 1959.
     Herbert and Beverly were married on October 30, 1961 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Watkins and have lived in Newhall most of their married life.
     Beverly was employed as a Mail Handler at the Main Post Office in Cedar Rapids for twenty years and retired on May 30, 2006.Herbert was employed at FMC for twenty-three years, Lefebure for several years, and in the Shipping & Receiving Dept. of Van Meter Co. in Cedar Rapids prior to his retirement on May 31, 2006.
     Beverly and Herbert were members of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Newhall.  They were known for having a beautiful lawn and yard at their residence.  They enjoyed mushrooming, picking raspberries, and fishing. They were avid Hawkeye fans.  Both were very active in their grandchildren's lives and their sports activities. They also loved to play cards and this past Sunday they enjoyed teaching granddaughter Kelsey to play pinochle.  Beverly loved to bake.  Herbert was a former member of the Jaycees in Newhall and had coached and served as an Umpire for the Newhall Little League and Pony League for over thirty-five years.
     The couple is survived by their son, Gary (Darcy) Kearns of Van Horne; their daughter, Susan (Larry) Kithcart of Belle Plaine; their grandchildren, Kelsey and Jordan Kearns of Van Horne, and Caitlyn Kithcart of Belle Plaine; Beverly's parents, George and Bernice Becker of Watkins; Herbert's mother, Carolyn Kearns of Cedar Rapids; Beverly's siblings, Jim (Sue) Becker of Newhall, Tom (Amy) Becker of Watkins, and Glenice (Gary) Peck of Clive; and Herberts's siblings, Jan (Wayne) Townsend, and David Kearns, all of Cedar Rapids.
     They were preceded in death by their son, Roger Kearns; Herbert's father; his infant sister, Mary Jean and adult sister, Nancy Kearns.
     Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
