VINTON- Leo J. Schoonover, age 89, died Friday, May 11, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Rev. Thomas Hartwell officiating. Interment will be held at Bear Creek Cemetery north of Vinton. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 8 AM until service time. A Memorial Fund has been established. Leo was born July 23, 1917 at Halfway, MO to Fred and Mary (Clark) Schoonover. On June 25, 1965 he married Dorothy Franklin at their Vinton residence. Leo was employed by the maintenance department of Iowa Manufacturing and retired in 1980. In his leisure he enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. He is survived his wife, Dorothy of Vinton; three sons, Richard (Elvita) Schoonover of San Diego, CA; William (Sue) Poorman of Omaha, NE, and John (Diane) Poorman of Vinton; three daughters, Darlene E. (Rev. Thomas) Hartwell of Minneapolis, MN, Janice (Darwin) Halstead of Canyon City, CO, and Kathy (Tom) Steiner of Colorado Springs, CO; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Sylvia Schoonover of Vinton, and Hazel Bell of Cedar Rapids.. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Leo "Toby" and Delbert Poorman; and his brother, George Schoonover.
