SHELLSBURG:  Leona Linder Yates, age 96, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at Rock Ridge Care Center in Shellsburg following an extended illness.
     Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM, Monday, July 31, 2006 at the Palo United Methodist Church with Rev. John Howerton and Chaplain Donnita Payne Hostetter officiating.  Private Committal Services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg.
Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St. in Vinton from 4 to 7 PM on Sunday.
     Leona was born January 4, 1910 in Shellsburg to Roy E. and Lora A. (Maxson) Harbert and graduated from the Shellsburg High School in 1927.
  She attended Cornell College and graduated with a degree in music in 1931..  Leona taught in DeWitt where she met her future husband, Walter Linder of Parkville, MO, who also taught in DeWitt.  The couple moved to Shellsburg where Walter was a partner in Harbert and Linder Insurance Agency.   In the 1940's Leona captured the state woman's archery title six years in a row.  After Walter's death in 1969, Leona continued to operate the insurance agency until 1977.
      She married Guy G. Yates on June 1, 1977, and moved to Guy's home in Palo.  They were married nineteen years at the time of his death in 1996.   Leona and Guy enjoyed traveling and took trips abroad.  They also spent many winters in Arizona.
     In 2004 Leona moved to Rock Ridge Care Center in Shellsburg after being hospitalized.
     She is survived by her son, Richard Harbert Linder and his wife, Patricia of  Kalispell, MT; granddaughters, Lora Adams, and Lisa (John) Stephenson  all of Omaha;  great-grandsons, Justin and Craig Adams of Omaha; her step-son, Howard (Naomi) Yates, Palo; step-grandchildren, Dale Yates and Ruth (J. Edward) Kibbie all of Palo; and many step-grand and great-grandchildren.
     A memorial fund has been established for the Palo Methodist Church Building Fund or Rock Ridge Library Fund.
