NEWHALL: Mary Stien, age 96, died Saturday, December 6, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, December 11, 2008 at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall with Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery, rural Newhall. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the church.
Mary was born on February 12, 1912 in Valtinov, Moravia, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Frank and Frances (Straka) Dvorak. She immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of seven. On October 9, 1937, she was united in marriage to Richard Stien at the St. John Parsonage in Newhall. Mary and Richard farmed in the Newhall area for many years and she continued to live on the farm after Richard's death in 2003. Mary had been a resident at Evergreen Estates #3 for the past two years.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, where she was a member of the Tabitha Society and Lamplighters. Mary also served as a 4-H leader for a number of years. She was a talented artist and loved to cook, crochet and knit. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and hosting large family gatherings at the farm.
She is survived by two sons, Donald Stien and Roger (Linda) Stien, all of Atkins; one daughter, Darlene (Ron) Ribble of Newhall; four grandchildren, Zach (Ciann) Stien, Jerid Stien, Tricia (Chris) Johnson, and Cynthia Meyer; eight great grandchildren, Dylan and Evan Johnson, Lacy Stien, and Elizabeth, Madison, Hillary, Kaylee and Carter Meyer; and two sisters-in-law, Edna Stien and Hazel Stien, both of Newhall.
In addition to her parents and husband Richard, she was preceded in death by one brother Frank Dvorak and five sisters, Frances Prchal, Blanche Lagos, Emily Klug, Gusty Kinch and Lillian Kukoda.
Memorials may be left for St. John Lutheran Church.
