VINTON: Sterling Gewecke, 93 of Vinton and formerly of Newhall died Sunday, July 23, 2006 at the Vinton Lutheran Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids with Rev. John Hegarty and Rev. Clinton Jeffers officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at Phillips Funeral Home, 212 East Sixth Street in Vinton. Interment will be in Cedar Memorial Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
Sterling was born September 10, 1912 the son of Henry C. and Minnie (Schield) Gewecke in rural Belle Plaine. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Hagen on February 14, 1935 in Belle Plaine.
Sterling is survived by his wife of 71 years, Kathryn of Vinton; son Dennis (Connie) Gewecke of Vinton; Grandchildren, Cindy Gewecke of Palo and Terry (Lori) Gewecke of Atkins; Great Grandchildren, Rachel and Brooke Gewecke; Step-Grandchildren, Lori (Robert) Larsen of Lawrenceville, Georgia and Gregg Evans of Cedar Falls; and Step-Great Grandchildren, Ashley and Bryce Larsen.
In addition to his parents, Sterling was preceded in death by an infant son; his brother, Earl Gewecke; two sisters, Idella Meyer and Mildred Drahos.
