URBANA-Wendy Getty, age 45, died peacefully at her home Monday evening, July 24, 2006 following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 4 P.M., Friday, July 28th at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E 6th St) Vinton with Pastor Andy Whittenburg officiating. Interment will be held at the Urbana Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 P.M. on Thursday.
Wendy was born August 1, 1960 at Cedar Rapids to Albert and Janice (Wendel) Hepker. She graduated from Urbana High School in 1978. She married Jim Getty on September 10, 1994 at Cedar Rapids.
Wendy worked as an Executive Assistant for Ockenfels and Associates for 19 years and owned and operated Getty Tax Service for over 25 years. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, farming, raising cattle, mushrooming, deer hunting, fishing and riding motorcycles. Although she had many talents and interests, Wendy's true passion was Emergency Medical Services. She was a certified EMT - Intermediate, an American Heart Association CPR Instructor, and an EMS Evaluator. As an EMS Instructor she taught several classes at Kirkwood Community College. She served her community for more than 26 years with the Urbana Area Ambulance Service, where she was the director for the past two consecutive years and several years prior.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; her children, Eric Weekly of Newhall, Katie Getty and Ryan Weekly; her parents, Albert and Janice Hepker; her maternal grandmother, Faye Wendel; her sister, Becky (Gary) Raue, all of Urbana; her brother Todd (JoAnn) Hepker of Vinton; three nephews, Hank Raue of Shellsburg, Eli Raue of Coggon, and Michael Hepker of Vinton; one niece, Sarah Hepker of Vinton; her brother-in-law, Dave (Penny) Getty of Urbana; and her mother-in-law, Esther Getty of Walker.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Elwood Wendel; paternal grandparents, Elias and Gen Hepker; and her father-in-law, Harold Getty.
A memorial fund has been established.
