VINTON: Charlene Sue “Susie” Hansen died peacefully at Virginia Gay Hospital on August 19, 2026.
Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Vinton, 608 First Avenue, on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service. There will also be a visitation on Wednesday evening August 26, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home, 212 East 6th Street in Vinton.
Susie was born at Virginia Gay Hospital on August 20, 1937, to George and Charlotte (Baird) Wilson. She and Willis Hansen were united in marriage on September 4, 1955. He preceded her in death on October 1, 2012. Susie lived in Washington state with Willis during his military service, where their son was born. Other than that, Susie lived her entire life in Vinton. She was employed at Iowa Electric/Alliant Energy.
Susie enjoyed sports, particularly basketball, and never missed an opportunity to let family and friends know when the Indiana Fever was playing. She was an avid collector of many things, including dolls, gnomes, trolls, angels, figurines, and especially flowers of every sort. She lived for her flower garden in the summer months and won many prizes for her arrangements at the County Fair. She also won the “Yard of the Month”.
Susie is survived by her son Kris (Sue) Hansen, her grandchildren Josh (Stacy) Hansen and Sara Hansen, as well as her great-grandchildren Alayna, Westin, and Merett Hansen. She also leaves behind step-grandchildren Christy and Ben Whitesell and step-great-grandchildren Joseph Sullivan and Fayth Joens. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Rose Hansen, and brother-in-law Keith (Barbara) Hansen.
Susie also leaves behind many nieces and nephews with whom she remained very close.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Harriette Wilson, brother-in-law Gilbert Hansen, and her sisters: Dorothy McNamee, Marian Madorin, Evelyn Fleming, Mary McCall, Georgia Thompson, Darlene Heaton, and Dona Dales.
