Obituary

VINTON:  David Carl Henkle, age 77, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February, 21, 2025 at his home in Vinton.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 until 5:00 PM, Saturday, March 1, 2025 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton.  A memorial fund has been established.  Interment with graveside military rites will be held in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery with his parents.

David was born on February 7, 1948, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Hollis and Elsie (Schueler) Henkle.  He attended Benton Community High School and graduated with the class of 1966.  Dave attended Kirkwood Community College and was drafted into the United States Army.  He served in the 1st Infantry Division in Communications in Viet Nam, attaining the rank of sergeant.  He was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Bronze Star for his service .  Following his discharge, Dave  worked for Communications Engineering for a number of years, and he and 2 other friends founded Audio Associates.  Following the sale of Audio Associates to WMT Muzak, Dave finished his career as an installer with DB Acoustics in Cedar Rapids.

Dave loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and boater.  He hand crafted a number of fishing rods and lures throughout his life.  He had a broad circle of friends who he loved to spend time with and was a member of the Cedar River Rats.  Dave was a quiet man with a quick wit and a ready smile, who was always ready to help a friend.

He is survived by his sister Kay (Sherman) Strootman of West Des Moines; his niece, Jessica (Dr. Justin) Morar of Omaha, NE; and his great nieces and nephew, Lennon, Blakely, and Milo Morar.  Dave always loved cats, and is also survived by his cat Stuart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his nephew Nicholas Strootman.
