VINTON:  David J. Martin, 53, of Vinton was called to rest at Unity Point St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids on Friday, October 18, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

A Celebration of David's life will be held from 2:00 until 5:00 PM, Saturday, November 2 , 2024, at the Phillips Funeral Home (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton.  Military Honors will be conducted at the funeral home at 2:30 PM by U.S. Marine Corps Funeral Honors and Geo G. Luckey American Legion Post # 57 of Vinton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. All are invited to share a memory or story of their treasured time with David.

David was born on April 25, 1971, in Cedar Rapids to John and Theresa (Wiskus) Martin. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, Class of 1989.  After serving the United States Marine Corps during Operation Desert Storm & Desert Shield of the Gulf War, David met and married the love of his life, Cindy Weeks on May 21, 1994, at First Christian Church of Cedar Rapids.

He held a variety of civilian roles throughout his working career, excelling in all he did. David was a dedicated and doting father and husband, working hard to support his family to the fullest extent. He completed his Associate of Applied Science degree and obtained Registered Nurse Certification at Kirkwood in 2007. As an EMT-B and behavioral health nurse, David was known to be knowledgeable, compassionate, and a source of levity amongst patients, families, and coworkers alike. His charisma and kindness touched the lives of many, as it was evident he enjoyed connecting with patients on a human level and felt fulfillment in improving the lives of those he served.

In his off-time, David was an avid outdoorsman and creative chef. He could always be found researching, planning, and engaging in fishing, hunting, and foraging. His passion for learning was contagious and he possessed a unique ability to educate others by making complex information digestible. David never shied away from a challenge and embraced volunteer opportunities in the community. He expressed love by sharing laughter, good food, and wise words with those around him.

David will be remembered as a storyteller, an educator, a purveyor of humor, an outdoorsman, a veteran, a nurse, a coach, a chef, a husband, a father, a brother and a friend to many across the communities he touched.

David is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cindy; children, Hunter (Liz) Martin, Caitlyn (Dylan) Borseth; siblings Debra (Jamie) Emanuel, Doug (Doreen) Martin; sibling-in-laws Loree Weeks, Harmand (Chastity) Weeks; mother-in-law Linda Weeks; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law Harmand Weeks; sibling Daniel Martin; and several brothers-in-arms.
