PALO: Dean E. Owens, 87, died Saturday, June 18, 2022 at his residence following an extended illness. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public services. There will be a private burial with Graveside Military Rights at a later date.
Dean was born September 29, 1934 in Cedar Rapids to Dewayne and Grace (Whipple) Owens. Following graduation from high school, he farmed for a while. Dean served two tours of duty in the 5th Marines during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1959. On January 11, 1958 he married Barbara Clark in Virginia. The couple later divorced. Dean was employed as an inspector for FMC for many years. Prior to his retirement he received a horticulture degree from Kirkwood Community College.
Dean was an avid non-fiction reader and had a passion for politics. He loved sharing his thoughts and opinions in the Gazette's "Letter's to the Editor". He also enjoyed watching TV and following Hawkeye Football.
He is survived by his children, Jeff (Sue) Owens of Mt. Sterling, KY, Julia (Steve) Parke of Shellsburg, and Jane Owens of Palo: 4 grandchildren, Jodi Parke, Adam Parke, Jon Owens and Michelle Craft; one great-granddaughter, Macey Craft; his sister, Donna Brownlie of Fairfax; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother who died at childbirth and his ex-wife, Barbara.
