VINTON: Dora Jean Gordon, 98, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at ABCM Rehabilitation in Independence.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday March 4, 2023 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton with Rev. Stephen Preus officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Friday at Phillips Family Center (605 2 nd Ave) in Vinton. Burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. A memorial fund has been established.
Dora Jean was born May 29, 1924 in Vinton, the daughter of John and Amanda (Schmidthans) Remington. She attended Vinton Schools and graduated in 1941 as valedictorian at the age of 17. Following graduation, she attended Coe College and taught in country schools north of town. She was united in marriage to James Ray Gordon on August 6, 1943, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton. Jim preceded Dora Jean in death in 1973.
Dora Jean was employed by Vinton Schools. Her last position was food service director for the district where she was known for her homemade cinnamon rolls and buns. Dora Jean was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, PEO Chapter, Women's Club, Virginia Gay Auxiliary, The Lutheran Home Auxiliary and served as a 4-H leader. She was recognized as Woman of the Year in 1998. Dora Jean was an accomplished seamstress, cook and baker. She enjoyed playing bridge and her various social clubs, but her greatest joy came from spending time with family and attending her grandkids activities.
She is survived by her children, Nancy Rose (Dean) Good, Constance Jean Gill, Rickie Joe (Lonna) Gordon, Margot Ann (Roger) Nowicke and Dwyn Ellen (Shawn) Thudium; 13 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, and husband Jim, Dora Jean was preceded in death by her son Scott Gordon in 1973 and son in law Pat Gill.
