Obituary

VINTON:  Douglas Ray "Doug" Tumilty, age 75, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at his home in Vinton, surrounded by his loving family.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, May 29, 2025 at Maplewood Cemetery in Vinton with Tyler Henkel officiating.  A celebration of Doug's life will follow at the Vinton Legion Hall from 4:00 until 7:00 PM.  Memorials may be directed to the family.

Doug was born, on March 30, 1950, the son of Raymond and Shirley (Williams) Tumilty.   He graduated from Washington High School in 1968.   In January of 1969, he was united in marriage to Teresa Williams. They had 3 daughters, and the couple later divorced in 1981.  On December 20, 1997, Doug married Kathy (Ransom) Mahr in Vinton.

Doug farmed for many years, and also raised cattle, hogs and sheep.  He loved the farm and his John Deere tractors.  He also hauled grain for himself and many area farmers.  Doug was a fanatic for planting straight rows as well as straight cuts while mowing.  Doug loved spending time with family and friends.  He was a member of the Cedar Sailors and loved boating on the Cedar, and Mississippi rivers.  Lately he very much enjoyed Can-Am rides, and especially trips to the casinos.

He is survived by his wife Kathy;  children, Renee (Brian) Sadler, Robyn (Ted) Oberhauser, Rachele (Ted) Steffens, all of LaPorte City; step-children, Shannon (Misty) Mahr, of Dysart; Hayley (Jeff) Rippel, of Vinton; 12 grandchildren; Thavier, Illian and Arden Oberhauser La Porte City.  Katie and TJ Davison of Laporte City, Emily and Matt Gorkow of Van Horne, Conner Steffens and Olivia Steffens of La Porte City, Dylan and Christine Rippel of Marion, Tyler and Kathleen Rippel of Peosta, Chase Rippel of Vinton, Taylor McGowan Cedar Rapids, and Nathan Mahr Dysart; 4 great-grandchildren, and 1 on the way; his brother, Dwight Tumilty of Cedar Rapids; and sister, Deb (Bill) Garbers of Vinton.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents.
