VINTON:  Greta (Whitmer) Geiken, age 89, passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, August 12, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton with Rev. David Lingard officiating.  Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton.  Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 PM, Sunday at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6 ^th Street) in Vinton.

Greta was born on July 11, 1930 in Cedar Rapids to James A. and Velma B. (Jordan) Whitmer. She attended Hunt's Business College in Cedar Rapids and took computer classes at Kirkwood later in her life.  On August 18, 1953, she was united in marriage to Myron B.L. Geiken in Cedar Rapids.  He preceded Greta in death in 1977.  Greta worked for many years as a secretary and receptionist at the Vinton Lutheran Home and as a supervisor at Vinton Parks and Recreation.  She was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of the Mary & Martha Guild.  She was also a member of the church choir.  Greta enjoyed playing cards, bingo and bowling.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family.

She is survived by her children; Deb (Bob) Fenton of Omaha, NE, Denise (Randie) Brodigan of Dysart, Dixie Sturtz of Dysart, Deanna (Tom) Yocum of Gilmer, TX and Steven (Kim) Geiken of Omaha, NE; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law Barb Whitmer of Cedar Rapids.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Wayne and Keith Whitmer.
