VINTON: Leta Mae Christy, age 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 13, 2019 at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton .
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Garrison with Rev. Mark Leckband officiating. Interment will be held at the Garrison Cemetery. Her family will greet friends from 4:00 until 7:00 PM, Tuesday, at the Phillips funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6 th Street) in Vinton. A memorial fund has been established.
Leta Mae was born on February 14, 1935, in Garrison, the daughter of Ivan and Esther (Strellner) Reiss. She graduated from Van Horne High School in 1953. On February 12, 1956, she was united in marriage to Richard Christy in Van Horne. Richard and Leta Mae farmed in the Garrison area for many years before moving to Vinton. In her younger years, Leta Mae taught Sunday School and Bible School at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Van Horne and enjoyed sewing and crafts. She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Garrison where she enjoyed membership in Tabitha.
She is survived by her children, Susan (David) Fuls of Belmond, Diane Christy of Vinton; three grandchildren, John Fuls, Rachel (Bob) Paulus, and Matthew Fuls; 2 great-grandchildren, Rose and Robin Paulus; her brothers, John (Ardis) Reiss of Van Horne, and George (Carma) Reiss of Vinton; and her sister-in-law Naomi McClurg of Brookings SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband Richard in 2009; her great-grandson, Ryan Paulus; and 2 brothers-in-law, Jim (Dorothy) Christy, and George McClurg.
