Obituary

VINTON: Penny Sue Steinford, 60, of Vinton passed away Saturday, October 10, 2026 after a courageous battle with bone and lung cancer. Friends may visit the family from 2:00 to 5:00pm on Sunday, October 18, at Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton. A private family burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton.

Penny Sue (Hummel) Steinford was born November 15, 1965 in Vinton, Iowa, daughter of Jerry and Lorna (Fennern) Hummel. She grew up on the family farm north of Vinton also known as Hummel’s corner. Penny was the youngest of 5 girls in the family. Penny graduated from Vinton-Shellsburg High School with the class of 1984 and married Kirk Steinford on June 17, 1989. The couple made Vinton their home and raised their daughter, Courtney.

Penny worked at several jobs around Benton/Linn County. She worked for Norand Corporation - Cedar Rapids, Benton County Extension Office where she was the office assistant, 4-H and Cloverbud leader, Benton County Cattlemen Secretary, Vinton-Shellsburg Schools as a para-educator and the Benton County DHS office as a Secretary. Penny loved her work and always made many new friends and will be ever so grateful for the adventures and memories she had with them all.

In her leisure time, Penny could be found outdoors, mowing the grass or shoveling the snow, rocking on the patio, splitting wood or ranger riding around the neighborhood. Penny was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Indiana Fever and the Golden State Warriors teams, along with her daily routine of watching HGTV, game shows, and Hallmark movies. Through all her achievements, her proudest was spending time with her grandchildren — Lolo, Kendall and Mollie.

Left to cherish Penny’s memory is her husband, Kirk of 37 years, her daughter Courtney and husband Danny Bieshaar and grandchildren Lorraine Lorna, Kendall Maurice and Mollie Judith of Englewood, Colorado; Mother, Lorna (Hummel) Arp, of Keystone, Iowa; Sisters, Janice (Duane) White of Vinton, Iowa, Phyllis (Mike) Severtsgaard of Vinton, Iowa, Jean (Steve) Merchant of Snyder, Oklahoma, Jackie (Rocky) Fisher of Vinton, Iowa; In-Laws, Lori (Jim) Hill of Mt. Auburn, Iowa and Christy Steinford of Marengo, Iowa; and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jerry Hummel; grandparents, Perry & Mae Hummel and Walter & Hertha Fennern; mother-in-law, Lorraine Steinford; brother-in-law, Blake Steinford; and several aunts, uncles, niece, and cousins.
