VAN HORNE:  Robert Dean "Bob" Schadle died peacefully on Thursday, August 9, 2018 surrounded by his family.  Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne with Pastor Leonard Ranson officiating.  Interment will be in the Garrison Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Thomas F. Bevins American Legion Post # 148 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors officiating and a meal will follow at the Van Horne Community Center.  Visitation will also be held at the church from 4 – 7 PM, Monday, August 13, 2018.  A Memorial Fund has been established.  Phillips Funeral Home – Keystone is in charge of arrangements.

Bob was born May 14, 1934 to Marvin and Dovie (Ransom) Schadle on the family farm in Big Grove Township.  He graduated from Van Horne High School in 1952.  Bob married Betty Sturtz on October 24, 1954 and then served his country in Korea from 1957 – 1958.  After returning from the service, he worked hard farming and raising livestock on the Schadle Century Farm where he was born.  Bob also worked as a rural mail carrier in Benton County until his retirement in 1997.  In 2003 they moved to Van Horne where Bob lived until moving in May to Windsor Manor in Vinton.

Bob loved to fish, especially in the Northern Iowa trout streams and Canada.  He was an avid reader and enjoyed may years of camping with friends and family.  He was a true outdoorsman and had may trophies of his deer, pheasant and fishing trips.  He learned to play the guitar later in life and enjoyed playing and singing, even writing many songs himself.  He had a love for his family and a wonderful sense of humor that will be deeply missed.

Bob is survived by his three sons:  Jeff (Teresa) Schadle of Vinton; Greg (Kris) Schadle of Keystone and Scott (Amy) Schadle of rural Watkins; his two grandchildren, Neil and Madelyn Schadle.  He is also survived by his brother, Larry (Kathy) Schadle of North Carolina; his sister, Linda (Phil) Garoutte also of North Carolina and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty of 56 years and his parents.
