VINTON:  Shirley A. (Cherveny) Whitson, 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 8, 2022 at Virginia Hospital in Vinton with her sons by her side.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, May 13, 2022 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6 ^th Street) in Vinton. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 PM, Thursday at the funeral home.  A memorial fund has been established.

Shirley was born on June 6, 1936, the daughter of Frederick and Albina (Novotny) Cherveny.  She graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton, with the class of 1955.

On June 22, 1957, she was united in marriage to Maurice J. Whitson in Vinton.  Shirley loved spending time outdoors.  She was an avid gardener and was very proud of her lawn and plantings at home.  She also enjoyed mushroom hunting and fishing as well as traveling with Maurice. She also participated in bowling leagues in her younger years.  She was very proud of her two sons.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Barry (Terry) Whitson of Cedar Rapids, Brett Whitson of Vinton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Maurice; 2 brothers, Russell and Edward Cherveny; and 2 sisters, Arlene Cherveny, and Darlene Mikoda.
