VAN HORNE: William H. Schlue, age 87, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Van Horne, passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at his home at Grand Living in Cedar Rapids.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, October 3, 2024,at Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne, with Rev. Carol Kress officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until service time, also at the church. Interment will be held at Salem Cemetery in rural Van Horne. Memorials may be directed to the Salem Cemetery, Salem United Methodist Church, or the Van Horne Public Library, or treesforever.org.
William "Bill" Schlue was born March 18, 1937, in Vinton, the son of William and Mildred Lillian (Fromm) Schlue. He graduated from Van Horne High School, with the class of 1955, and Iowa State College in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in farm operations. Bill served his Country in the United States Army Reserves following college.
On June 19, 1960, he was united in marriage to Karen Kruewell in Le Mars, Iowa. Bill farmed in the Van Horne area his entire life. He was a lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church. He was very active in his community, as a member of the Van Horne Lions Club, the local telephone board, the rural fire board and as chair of the Salem Cemetery board for many years. Bill loved horses, old Westerns, travel, and a really good story - especially if he was telling it. He will be very much missed.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Karen; three children, Mollie (Tom Tapp) Schlue, of Cedar Rapids, Matthew (Laura) Schlue of Phoenix, AZ, Martha (Hans) Graf of Baltimore, MD; four grandchildren, Lillian Tapp, Elsa Graf, Charles Schlue, and Alexander Schlue. He is also survived by his sister Mary Kay Richardson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
