"Bill" Thorman
Mar 30, 1943 — Sep 29, 2019
BLAIRSTOWN: William C. "Bill" Thorman, 76, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, October 4, 2019 at Grace Lutheran Church in Blairstown, with Rev. Jeffrey A. Schanbacher officiating. Military rites will be held following the funeral service at the church by the M.J. Kirby American Legion Post #170 of Blairstown. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 PM, Thursday at the church. A memorial fund has been established.
Bill was born the 30 th of March of 1943 in rural Blairstown, Iowa, to Merl and Jeanette (Thompson) Thorman. He was a resident of Blairstown his entire life. He graduated from Blairstown High School in 1961. On April 18, 1964, Bill was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Vicki Landuyt.
Bill loved farming and that is what he did his entire career. He grew up farming with his father at an early age and built a successful farming and trucking business, T Farms LTD.
Bill was also a public servant. He served in the Army National Guard after high school. Then toward the end of his farming career, he became an EMT on the Blairstown Ambulance and later became an ambulance driver. In addition to being a first responder, he worked at the Benton County Sheriff's Department as a dispatcher, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
As a farmer, Bill really didn't have much time for hobbies, but he has aways been a huge Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed politics and singing in the Grace Lutheran Church choir. In retirement, he enjoyed refurbishing tractors and then driving the tractors in tractorcades and parades around Iowa during the summer. He and Vicki also enjoyed traveling in their motorhome during the summer and then driving their motorhome south to winter in Mesa, Arizona.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Vicki; his daughter, Tara (Lucas) Woodland; 2 grandchildren, Elijah and Evelyn and one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Steve Thorman
